J.J. Barea Out Six Weeks
Barea, 32, left Wednesday’s 90-83 loss against the Boston Celtics with an apparent leg injury. The point guard has confirmed that he will miss six weeks of action. This is a big blow for an already depleted Mavericks team. With Dirk Nowitzki (Achilles), Deron Williams (Calf) and Devin Harris (Toe) already out with injury. All three are key players for the Mavericks, and now Barea joins the disabled list. This season, Barea is averaging 16.4 points, 5.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds. Great numbers for a player who entered the season as the back up at point guard.
“Thank God there is no damage to the Achilles tendon and no surgery is required. I have a tear in the muscle between my calf and the tendon” explained Barea. “I will have to use a walking boot for two weeks and won’t partake in any physical activity for the next month. I estimate that I will be out for about a month and a half.”
The Mavericks have had a disappointing start to the season, with the team currently holding a 2-8 record. However, Barea’s productivity has been solid so far this season. Along with Harrison Barnes, Barea has been one of the Mavericks best performers on a night to night basis. Barea’s injury puts Dallas in a very difficult position. With Williams questionable and Harris targeting a comeback later this month, Barea’s injury leaves the Mavericks without a healthy point guard.
It appears Seth Curry will forced into playing the point guard position a little more than anticipated. The team also announced on Thursday the signing of Jonathan Gibson. Gibson is a point guard who played for Dallas in the NBA Summer League, averaging 7.1 points in the process.
