The NBA silly season continues as the trade deadline rapidly approaches. The Washington Wizards consider themselves as Eastern Conference contenders. To this end, they want to strengthen their team, especially their bench. On Wednesday, the Wizards agreed to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets which will send Croatian sniper Bojan Bogdanovic to Washington.

Trade Details

To recap, the Nets are sending Bogdanovic and Chris McCullough to the Wizards for Andrew Nicholson and a lottery protected first-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. Additionally, Marcus Thornton will return to the Nets as part of the deal. Thornton played for Brooklyn during the 2013-14 season. However, the Nets are expected to waive Thornton shortly, per Wojnarowski.

Brooklyn’s Perspective

Throughout the season, Nets GM Sean Marks has worked to acquire assets. This is key to Marks’ philosophy and plan. As it stands currently, the Nets now own two first-round picks in the 2017 draft, and Marks will try to accumulate even more. That’s especially relevant because the upcoming draft is projected to be loaded with prospects. Some pundits say it may rival the famed 1984 and 1996 drafts in terms of talent. In Nicholson, the Nets receive a power forward. With regards to salary cap space, Nicholson signed a four-year contract worth $26 million last summer. He’ll have a chance to rejuvenate his career in his third NBA destination.

Washington’s Perspective

To shore up the Wizards rotation, team President and GM Ernie Grunfeld has acquired Bogdanovic, a sharpshooting swingman. Bogdandovic will be counted on to provide timely shooting and spacing. He is durable and has been consistent for the Nets throughout this challenging season. The Wizards also add McCollough, a forward/center. McCullough is a rangy defender and provides an inside presence. He has split time between the Nets and their NBA D-League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. During his time in Long Island, McCullough worked tirelessly on his offense.

Expect both organizations to try to make more moves as Thursday’s trade deadline approaches.
