March Madness: East Region Second Round Second Day Recap in NCAA Tournament

On Sunday in the East Region, Second Round, the Baylor Bears defeated University of Southern California (USC) Trojans 82-78. South Carolina upset 2nd seeded Duke Blue Devils 88-81 to head to the Sweet Sixteen.

Here are the second round matchup recaps from Sunday March 19, 2017:

Sunday March 19, 2017 –

Bok Center – Tulsa, Oklahoma
11 – USC Trojans (26-9) – 78
3 –  Baylor Bears (27-7) – 82

Johnathan Motley scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help Baylor defeat USC 82-78. Terry Maston also scored 19 points and King McClure scored 17 points. In the final five minutes, Manu Lecomte scored all 12 of his points to help seal the win.

Lecomte scored eight points in 45 seconds to give Baylor a 73-67 lead. Baylor never relinquished the lead the rest of the game. USC was led by Chimezie Metu who scored 28 points. Bennie Boatwright scored 16 points.

Baylor go on to meet the South Carolina Game Cocks in the Sweet Sixteen.

Sunday March 19, 2017 –

Bon Secours Wellness Arena – Greenville, South Carolina

7 – South Carolina Game Cocks (24-10) – 88
2 – Duke Blue Devils (28-8) – 81

The South Carolina Game Cocks came back furiously from a first half deficit of 30-23 to upset a heavily favored Duke team 88-81. The Game Cocks scored 65 points in the second half to only 51 for the Blue Devils.

South Carolina was led by Sindarius Thornwell who scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. Chris Silva and Duane Notice both scored 17 points. Silva also added 10 rebounds. The Game Cocks took advantage of Duke’s 18 turnovers.

Duke were led by 20 points from Grayson Allen. Four other Duke starters scored in double digits. Amile Jefferson had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

South Carolina goes on to meet Baylor Bears in the Sweet Sixteen.
Here are the second round matchup recaps from Saturday March 18, 2017:

On Saturday, in the first big upset, the Wisconsin Badgers upset the top ranked Villanova Wildcats 65-62 to head to the Sweet Sixteen.  Florida Gators dominated their match up against the Virginia Cavaliers and won 65-39 returning to the Sweet Sixteen.

Saturday March 18, 2017 –
First Niagra Center – Buffalo, New York
1 – Villanova Wildcats (31-3) – 62
8 – Wisconsin Badgers (27-9) – 65

Wisconsin defeated Villanova 65-62. The Badgers over-came foul trouble for two of its star players to upset the defending champions. Nigel Hayes scored 19 points and made a nifty layup in traffic with 11.4 seconds left. Brandon Koenig was in foul trouble, but managed 17 points. The Badgers also over-came 14 turnovers compared to Wildcats eight.

The Wildcats were led by Josh Hart who scored 19 points. Hart was stripped on a drive in the final seconds to seal the win for Wisconsin. Wisconsin advance to face the Florida Gators in the Sweet Sixteen.

Saturday March 18, 2017 –
Amway Center – Orlando, Florida
5 – Virginia Cavaliers (23-10) 39
4 – Florida Gators (26-8) – 65

Florida completely dominated the Virginia Cavaliers.  They led 31-17 at halftime and continued to dominate in the second half and won 65-39.  Florida were led by forwards Justin Leon and Devin Robinson who both scored 14 points.  Leon and Robinson both had double doubles with 10 and 11 rebounds each respectfully as well.

Virginia just could not get much offense going.  They were led by center Jack Salt who scored eight points and grabbed ten rebounds.  Guard London Perrantes scored six points.

Florida will go on to face the Wisconsin Badgers in the Sweet Sixteen.
